The Reed Manga Series – What If I am Wrong – Part 2 – The Uncomfortable Reality

We’ve explored the power of asking, “What if I’m wrong?” in part 1.  It’s a question that encourages growth, builds resilience, and drives innovation. But here’s the hard truth—being wrong doesn’t always lead to a silver lining. Sometimes, the consequences of a wrong decision can feel overwhelming, even life-altering. And it’s time we acknowledge that reality.

[This is not for the faint-hearted. Keep reading at your own risk.]

The Other Side of Being Wrong

Let’s be honest: not every mistake leads to a heartwarming success story. Sometimes, being wrong can lead to devastating setbacks. Think about business owners who misjudged market trends and lost everything they’d built. Or parents whose well-intentioned decisions for their children’s futures didn’t turn out as expected. These are painful, and often, irreversible lessons.

In larger contexts, history shows us that being wrong can lead to even bigger consequences. Consider the financial crises caused by risky decisions, or the social movements derailed by flawed ideologies. Being wrong isn’t always a minor inconvenience—it can be life-shattering.

But this uncomfortable truth extends beyond the world of business or politics. Sometimes, a wrong decision, made in a single moment, can forever change the course of a young person’s life.

Real-Life Stories: Wrong Decisions by Teenagers

For teenagers, the pressure to fit in, to prove themselves, or to act on impulse can lead to choices that leave a permanent mark. Here are a few examples where wrong decisions in youth have had lifelong consequences.

1. The Tragic Case of Cyberbullying

In 2012, Canadian teenager Amanda Todd made a heart-wrenching video explaining the relentless bullying she had faced online and in school. A wrong decision in her early teens—to trust someone she met online—spiraled into years of public humiliation, emotional trauma, and cyberbullying. After one mistake, her life became a nightmare, eventually leading to her tragic suicide at just 15 years old. Amanda’s story shows how a wrong decision, compounded by the cruelty of others, can lead to irreversible consequences.

Cyberbullying has become a major issue among teenagers, and the wrong decisions made in those situations—whether by the victim or the perpetrator—can leave a lasting scar. Amanda’s story is a sobering reminder that being wrong, especially in the digital age, can come with consequences no one is truly prepared for.

2. The Devastating Consequences of Peer Pressure and Drugs

There’s no shortage of stories about teenagers who made one wrong decision under the influence of peer pressure, especially when it comes to drugs or alcohol. Take the example of Cameron Herrin, an 18-year-old in Florida who, in 2018, decided to engage in street racing with a friend. In a split-second wrong decision, he lost control of his car and struck a mother and her baby, killing them both. Cameron was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

His entire future was derailed by a momentary lapse in judgment—a decision that can never be undone. Stories like Cameron’s remind us that a wrong choice made in the heat of the moment can ruin not only the life of the person who made the mistake but also the lives of others around them.

3. The Dangers of Social Media Challenges

The rise of social media has led to the dangerous trend of online challenges, where teenagers feel pressured to participate for attention or social approval. In 2020, 15-year-old Chloe Phillips from Oklahoma lost her life after taking part in the “Benadryl Challenge,” a viral trend on TikTok where participants take excessive doses of the drug to induce hallucinations. Chloe’s death serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a wrong decision, influenced by fleeting social media trends, can lead to devastating outcomes.

Many teens make the wrong decision to chase popularity, even at the risk of their health or safety, not fully considering the irreversible consequences. Chloe’s story is one of many that illustrate the real dangers of being wrong, especially in a world where viral moments can have tragic consequences.

The Real Consequences of Being Wrong

These stories highlight a difficult truth: not every mistake has a happy ending. In today’s world, we often talk about resilience, learning from failure, and “failing forward,” but we need to also acknowledge the serious risks involved in some decisions. What if the mistake you make doesn’t lead to growth, but instead leads to a dead end?

Ask yourself: What if I’m wrong? What could that truly cost me? It might be your pride, your relationships, your future, or in the worst cases, your life. While we often focus on the silver linings of failure, it’s crucial to recognize that some wrong decisions come with a price you may not be able to pay.

The Reality of Accountability

So, what now? Should you live in fear of making decisions? No. But you should approach every choice with a deeper level of radical accountability. Before asking, “What if I’m wrong?”, also ask: Am I truly prepared for the worst-case scenario? Can I handle the fallout?

True confidence isn’t about embracing failure blindly. It’s about accepting that sometimes, the consequences of being wrong are serious and that you need to be prepared for them. Confidence comes from understanding the risks, taking accountability, and making decisions thoughtfully, not recklessly.

So, What If You’re Wrong?

The truth is, that being wrong can lead to lessons, growth, and resilience. But it can also lead to irreversible consequences. Before making that next big leap, ask yourself: What if I’m wrong? More importantly, can I live with that decision if it all goes wrong?

Because sometimes, being wrong won’t just change everything—it might end everything as you know it. The stakes are real. And the consequences? They can last a lifetime.

The key takeaway is the need for radical accountability in decision-making, understanding the risks, and being prepared for the consequences.
