In 1998, the Hollywood blockbuster Deep Impact captivated audiences with a gripping tale of survival, as humanity faced the ultimate disaster—a comet on a collision course with Earth. Starring Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, and Tea Leoni, the film depicted a race against time, with governments selecting a fraction of the population to retreat to underground bunkers, ensuring the survival of the human race. It was a story of fear, resilience, and the impact of life on a cosmic scale.
In Deep Impact, the U.S. government developed a contingency plan to preserve humanity from a comet’s impact by constructing underground bunkers in Missouri. Essential personnel, including scientists, engineers, doctors, and military officials, were selected for their skills critical to rebuilding society; while a lottery offered 800,000 ordinary citizens a chance to join them. Younger and healthier individuals were prioritized for their resilience.
The film’s exploration of humanity’s vulnerability linked to cosmic events feels especially relevant as we approach 25th January 2025, when Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars will align in a rare celestial phenomenon. This alignment occurs when planets appear to line up closely in the sky due to their orbital paths. While this alignment poses no threat to Earth, it is a powerful reminder of the precision and grandeur of the universe—an awe-inspiring interplay of celestial forces that sparks both wonder and humility. Events like these highlight the intricate dynamics of our solar system and how small yet interconnected we are in the grand scheme of the cosmos.
The word “impact” holds deeper meanings beyond celestial collisions. As a noun, it is the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another. As a verb, it means to have a strong effect on someone or something.

If you have the opportunity to go out into the world and do something impactful. Good, go out there and be impactful. But if not, don’t worry. Concentrate on being happy and content. The world needs more of these types of people.

Lessons from the Oak Tree
Sometimes, impact isn’t about action—it’s about being. An oak tree sitting outside is not trying to create a significant impact on anyone. By just sitting there in a calm and assured state of being, the oak tree by its mere presence is being impactful without even trying. If someone just happened to walk past that oak tree on a hot and sunny day, wishing to rest and cool down for a little while, that person will find refuge under the oak tree and will appreciate its presence and the shade it can offer on that particular day, at that particular time. The oak tree has had an impact on that person, just by being there.
This season reminds us that you don’t need grand gestures to make a difference. Being present, kind, and authentic is often enough to touch someone’s life.
This season is a call to embrace your uniqueness, shine your light, and trust in the ripple effects of your authenticity.
